Preached at Washington Square Park on Sunday, May 17th, 2026.

Hello, Washington Square Park!

My name is Pedro. I’m here to share a message with you. The Spirit of God, the Holy Spirit, has sent me and is upon me. He has anointed me to bring good news to the poor, to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, to open the prison doors for those who are bound, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor and the day of vengeance of our God.

I want to tell you something important: You are a piece of work. You are a masterpiece. God created us perfect. He made us in His own image. We represent Him here on earth. Our bodies were designed to live forever. We were meant to be eternal. We are put on this earth not only to govern it, but to govern the whole universe.

We were happy. We were eternal. And you know what? We still are eternal. You know it in your heart — you will never truly die. Your spirit is eternal. Even though I’m 54, I still feel like I’m 18 in my spirit. The body may be wearing out, but the spirit doesn’t feel age. We have eternity written in our DNA.

The problem is that we were created perfect and placed in this beautiful garden called Earth. Then we did the unthinkable — we disobeyed. Satan saw the opportunity, tempted us, and we sinned. Sin brought separation from God. It opened the door to death, and it destroyed our spirit. That very day, Adam and Eve died spiritually. They became broken. Shame took over. That’s why they felt naked and hid from God. They weren’t ashamed of their bodies — they were ashamed because they had lost the glory of God’s presence. They felt death entering their bodies and spirits.

Since then, Satan has taken advantage of our brokenness. He controls us through sin. Sin is how he manipulates us to hurt ourselves and others. No matter how hard you try, you keep falling into the same mistakes and addictions. Satan doesn’t want you free. He knows exactly how to use your brokenness, your failures, and your shame against you. He is the accuser of the brethren. He will rub your mistakes in your face until you feel unworthy to approach God. That’s why many people avoid church — they don’t want anyone to see the mess inside.

We are all broken. And we are all desperately looking for love.

Let me explain it this way. When God created us, He placed a clay pot in our hearts — a vessel designed to be filled with love. A baby is the perfect picture of this: pure, beautiful, innocent. That clay pot was meant to hold love, because all we really need as human beings is love.

But trauma and abuse cracked that pot. Many of us, like me, were abused by angry parents. My father was an angry man. He beat me and broke my spirit. He shattered my self-esteem. Later, bullying made it worse. So now the pot is fractured. No matter how much love you pour in, it leaks out. You stay empty.

People try to fill this broken pot with garbage: unhealthy sex (sometimes with the same gender), money, success, titles, drugs, or achievements. But it never holds. At the end, you’re still empty and angry. Broken people end up breaking others — their children, their spouses, their relationships. This is how sin and death keep spreading brokenness across the earth.

The Bible says a good man brings good things out of the good stored in his heart. But if your heart is broken, you have nothing good to give — only bitterness and emptiness. Many look shiny and successful on the outside, but inside they are shattered.

So we hide. We create masks, personalities, and happy faces so no one sees how broken we really are. Some are so broken they can’t function — they walk around like the living dead, controlled by addictions and even demons. Others build strong facades and identities. You see it right here in the park: skateboarders, the LGBT community, goths, Hare Krishnas, Christians — all kinds of groups. People flock together with others who share their particular brand of brokenness. It becomes a support group for broken toys.

I actually admire the honesty of the LGBT community. They say, “We’re broken in this way. We belong here.” But the worst group of all is the religious people. Religion is the biggest mask. Religious people feel safe because they belong to a big system — like passengers on the Titanic thinking it can’t sink. They paint the outside beautifully while they’re dead inside. They create rules, point fingers, and look down on others. They are the biggest hypocrites.

All religions do this — even atheism is a religion. Atheists put themselves above believers: “I’m a scientist, you’re ignorant for believing in God.” But they’re just as empty and broken as everyone else. Everybody has some belief system to cope with their brokenness and hide what’s inside.

Let me tell you a story. A very religious man, a Pharisee named Nicodemus, came to Jesus at night. He didn’t want anyone to see him with Jesus. He said, “Teacher, we know you are from God because of the miracles you do.” Then he asked, “What must I do to be saved?”

What he was really asking was, “How can my brokenness be fixed? How can I be put back together?” Jesus answered, “You must be born again.”

Nicodemus was confused: “How can I go back into my mother’s womb?” Jesus replied, “No, what is born of the flesh is flesh, but what is born of the Spirit is spirit. You need to be born again of the Spirit.”

Jesus was saying: “I have the power to take all your broken pieces and make you brand new — a new vessel that will never break, one that can hold love for yourself and for others.”

Later, those same religious people killed Jesus. They handed Him over to the Romans. He was scourged, spat on, beaten, and crucified. His body was broken as a sacrifice so that you and I could be made whole. He poured out His blood — His very life, which is love — so we could be restored.

That is the message of the cross: No matter how broken you are — even if you look perfect on the outside with money, success, and titles — Jesus can put you back together. Today.

If you are sick and tired of being sick and tired… if you’re tired of the cycle of bitterness, addiction, loneliness, self-hatred, or anger… Jesus is calling you. He can make you whole. He can give you a factory reset. He said, “If anyone is thirsty, come to me and I will give you living water that will overflow from your heart.”

Come to Jesus. Let Him fix your broken vessel so it overflows with love to others. You will become a new creation.

If that’s you — if you’re broken, hurting, or tired of wearing the mask — I want to pray for you right now. I’m not asking for anything. Just a step of faith. Like the thief on the cross who said, “Jesus, remember me,” and Jesus answered, “Today you will be with me in paradise.”

Jesus loves you. He gave everything for you. I love you too. Come and be made whole.

Thank you, everyone, for listening. I bless your life. Have a great and happy Sunday!
